Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The literature on so-called "alternative" or "militant" media has often focused on the difficulty of finding an exhaustive and definitive definition of its object of study (Downing, 2008; Atton, 2004; Couldry-Curran, 2003). The trait d'union of the multiple interpretative perspectives applied to them is the instance of otherness that is at the origin of their institution and of all their claims. Otherness with respect to the dominant systems of signification and to the symbolic horizons from these paths. An otherness that is weighed and evaluated now in relation to the dissonant contents and visions of the world that it is possible to find in them, now in relation to the methods of production and organization. Some have emphasized the experimental nature of alternative productions, others the eclecticism and the sub-cultural nature of their audiences; others the community root and the voluntary nature of participation (Bailey, Cammaerts, Carpentier, 2008).
