Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] This is a translation of Mark Twain's text "King Leopold's Soliloquy. A Defense of his Congo Rule" (1905). Urged by the Congo Reform Association, a humanitarian and philanthropic association, Mark Twain (1835-1910) took the pen to plead the cause of the victims, the colonized. Based on the numerous reports of missionaries and travelers who reported on the cruel greed of the whites, Twain imagined this "Soliloquio" which overturns the roles and seems to constitute the sovereign's self-defense, but highlights his cynical greed.
