Manzoni europeo?

[Autom. eng. transl.] The essay traces the European fortune of Manzoni, disputing the commonplace that it, after the glories of the first decades of the nineteenth century, has progressively declined and is now almost non-existent. In fact, the examination, for example, of the editions and translations in the German language shows that at least the promised spouses are still, in that cultural sphere, alive and operating (but the same can be said for the History of the infamous column). The author further advances the suggestion that there is a more underground Manzonian fortune, but perhaps just as significant, less studied because it is more difficult to trace: namely that entrusted to the revival of Manzoni's themes and forms in the works of European writers. He gives an essay identifying in the Flaubertian Madame Bovary the resumption (and contestation) of a key episode of the Betrothed, the alms made by Renzo, with his last money, to the beggars meeting outside the tavern where he rests before go see Bortolo (chap. XVII).
