Abstract

The project of writing a tragedy on Spartacus, conceived by Manzoni between 1821 and 1825,was inspired by the contemporary debate in England on slavery and, more precisely,by the Haitian revolt in 1802, whose memory we find in some verses of the second version of the 'Pentecoste' hymn (1819-1822)and in a letter written by Fauriel to Mrs.Clarke in 1825, the 24th of June.
