Abstract

The evening at the theatre is a recurrent motif in several novels. In a narrative text, the theatrical space points not only to the relation between spectators and actors on stage but also, in some cases, to the particular rapports that arise beyond the stage, between the members of the audience. The theatre, seen as a place of encounter and reunion for the community, helps the reader to speculate in a broader sense and also, more literally, in a visual sense, on the notions of individual and social identity. This study focuses on the presence of the so-called “Italian theatre” in two key novels of the mid-Nineteenth Century, namely, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and Anna Karenina by Lev Tolstoy. Firstly, Emma and Anna’s evenings at the Opera point to the centrality of the theatre within the life of the city and to its importance in strengthening the social identity of its citizens. In this respect, the particular shape of the Italian theatre helps to highlight these aspects. Secondly, on a more symbolic level, the moment of the performance refers to a semiotic of the theatre that clearly reminds the reader that the stage is par excellence a place of deception, a fictitious representative, a metaphor in itself. It is, in both novels, the emblem of the illusion and disillusionment, the substance in itself of the two protagonists’ lives.
