Abstract

The essay takes side in Manzoni’s supposed Jansenism to circumscribe its range. The Jansenistic milieu where Manzoni’s conversion takes shape, the habitual visits of clergy near to Jansenism, the reading of well-known Jansenistic authors, give Manzoni’s religiousness a strict and alert Jansenistic mark. Anyway, the perfect doctrinal orthodoxy of the author of “Morale Cattolica” is not damaged. In fact he shows full independence from the Jansenistic theses at least on the two crucial theological issues of the universality of blessing and good works.
