In order to build our sentence we merge several elements, in particular noun phrases and verbs. The linear order of these elements often does not mirror their actual semantic relations. Many scholars use the concept of scope to describe some of such semantic relations. The aim of this book is studying the relations between verbs and noun phrases that saturate their empty places and the relations between noun phrases themselves. Some semantic and syntactic scope theories are considered and criticized. The proposal advanced by the book is that the semantics of verbs and noun phrases often underdetermines the relations among their denotata and that in many cases these relations are defined by the context in which the sentence is uttered
