Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Cormac McCarthy (1933-2023) is already considered a classic by readers and writers around the world. This result, which today seems obvious, has never been entirely predictable. Critics have partly made him their darling for elitist taste, when he was not yet blessed with success. In part, however, they have reserved a skeptical treatment for him, not forgiving his strong idea of literature - capable of tackling the most challenging themes such as the nature of evil, the presence/absence of God, the abyss of freedom - nor the compromise with forms of mass culture such as cinema. This collection of essays aims to highlight the philosophical themes that run through his works. Not only the most famous, such as Blood Meridian and the Frontier Trilogy, but also some considered "minor" such as The Garden Keeper, the film screenplays (The Gardener's Son, The Counselor) and the drama The Stonemason: secondary paths, apparently more abrupt and rugged, which however offer those who agree to follow them extraordinarily clear panoramas. This is combined with a survey of McCarthy's writing laboratory conducted on the basis of unpublished correspondence that accompanied the writing of Beyond the Border. The aim of the paths proposed here is twofold: to give those who are already familiar with McCarthy's work ideas for deepening and reading it in a unitary light, and to introduce those who have not yet tackled it to one of the most exciting literary enterprises of our time.
