Abstract
The essay analyzes the construction of the early medieval section of the Christian Museum of Brescia (once the ancient female benedictine monastery of St. Giulia) consisting of funeral furnishings, golden crosses, umbo (shield boss), spears and swords. The formation of this museum part, wanted by the first director of the museum, Prospero Rizzini, had both celebratory intentions for the Longobard past of Brescia and didactic because the policies, born after the Italian unification, saw museums as structures capable of feeding civic feelings, recalling the town's history as an example of history of Italy. Finally, the research analyzes the architectural-urban transformation of the city, the restorations of the major medieval complexes (Broletto, Rotonda, Santa Giulia) and the new toponymy, within a very dynamic political framework.
