[Autom. eng. transl.] The Volume aims to present contents, models and specificities of the operations management function within the healthcare sector. Operations management (OM) is the business function that deals with the design, programming, management and control of all production processes that transform inputs / production factors into outputs (a good or a service). The objective of the OM is to design and organize activities in such a way that the production of the final output is efficient (without waste of resources) and effective (able to respond to the needs / expectations of the customers). In the case of healthcare companies, the OM deals with the planning, management and control of production areas (for example beds or operating theaters) where diagnosis, treatment and assistance are carried out with the aim of ensuring a flow of production factors (things and people) safe, appropriate, timely and efficient. In a situation of contraction of available resources and the affirmation of new models of organization of care (for example hospital for intensity of care) an effective management of productive logistics platforms becomes essential. This text declines to the case of healthcare companies the typical choices of the OM regarding (i) the layout and organization of the spaces; (ii) the sizing and planning of production capacity; (iii) the organization of production activities; (iv) technologies and information systems. The book also presents a series of analysis tools and design solutions useful for being able to set coherent and effective projects to change operations in healthcare companies. However, these issues are not dealt with solely from the perspective of management or technical engineering, but are part of the more general conceptual framework of the systemic order of business. In particular, the text underlines the importance of developing operations strategies consistent with: - the specificity of healthcare production processes; - the public nature of a significant part of the offer structures; - the characteristics of company organizational structures.
