Abstract

At the Berlin Conference of 1890, the German Emperor William II encouraged the school system to abandon its humanistic and cosmopolitan approach to culture in order to spread a strong patriotic spirit among the young generations. In spite of this, the name of Mörike occurs in more than 160 schoolbooks of the Second Reich: Editors of scholastic textbooks pushed to dedicate much space to the work of a poet who refused any sort of political engagement with art for his entire life. This essay aims to shed light on the reasons of this apparent incongruity.
