Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The events that took place in early 2011 revolutionized the Middle East geopolitical context. Regimes that have apparently dragged on for decades have quickly collapsed; new balances have emerged in the area and, not a secondary fact, the influence of the great powers in the region has proved ephemeral. Unfortunately, the depth of the phenomena that affected the countries of the enlarged Mediterranean has not been matched by an adequate understanding. Many aspects of the Arab Springs are still unexplained. Has there really been a point of no return? Or will the elements of continuity return to prevail over the pressures aimed at change? What are the root causes of the erosion of authoritarian regimes? What possibilities are open for European states - and Italy in particular - in the difficult attempt to establish new links with these countries? In an attempt to give an answer to these questions, the volume intends to illuminate the phenomena in question in the light of the main theories of Political Science and International Relations. The picture that emerges provides an accurate description of the complex contemporary Middle Eastern dynamics and aims to suggest new paths of research
