Abstract
Which are the devices regulating the representation of pain? What is the relationship between sight and reality? What is the difference between the show of pain and the theatre of piety? Christian theory of representation gives us an interesting perspective. Through patristic sources, this essay seeks to highlight the fundamental cornerstones of the visual culture of christian Middle Ages, underling those elements that make the theatre of the Passion of Christ a very empathetic scene, completely different from the detached show of pain.
