Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The primary prevention measures against HPV related pre-cancerous lesions are mainly represented by vaccination, available in Italy since 2006 and preferably carried out in adolescence, when the disease has not yet arisen. If the disease is already present, an important secondary prevention tool, represented by screening, is still available. The purpose of the latter is to identify the tumor at a very early stage, so that it is possible to treat it effectively and consequently obtain a greater number of cures and a reduction in the mortality rate. At the same time, the screening landscape is in the process of change: new technologies, such as the HPV-DNA Test, open up to innovative opportunities and methods of implementation. Furthermore, the expected reduction of cervical lesions in vaccinated women will lead over time to a structural modification of these programs. Pending the observation of these changes, the situation of the screening programs in Italy and the related data referring to the period 2007-2012 will be described below and, in conclusion, a critical analysis will be presented from the decision-making point of view on the introduction of the HPVDNA test as election screening.
