Abstract

'A'isha al-Ba'uniyya is a female mystic from 15th-century Damascus. In her treatise about 'The Principles of Sufism' she examines, at the request of a Sufi fellow, the four roots of Islamic mysticism: repentance, sincere faith, remembrance, and love. This last section is followed by an appendix on divine Love, which is here partially translated, for the first time, into Italian. A vibrant text, woven with Qur'anic quotations and 'A'isha's own poems, it represents a remarkable example of a female understanding of Islam.
