Abstract
This article analyses the value of the literary act as an instrument for the construction of a collective identity in the work of Roa
Bastos. Focusing on Bastos’ essays, I argue that, for Bastos, language and literacy are fundamental to the creation of an
independent Latin-American identity and to defining the general patterns of a literary theory that is coheres with the facts and
realities of contemporary Latin-America.
