Abstract
This paper aims at examining the context of teaching and learning Italian as a second language in the upper secondary school in Italy. After analysing the linguistic and communicative needs of non-native students and the desirable actions in the perspective of an educational policy for integration, we focus on the context of teaching and learning Italian for academic purposes, that is, in this case, Italian used to study school subjects, as it is particularly important both from the point of view of the learners’ needs and in relation to the necessity of teacher training. Then we present some didactic activities about disciplinary texts, in order to exemplify a way to teach Italian for academic purposes. Finally, we propose considering the significant role, which the CLIL methodology can play in teaching and learning Italian as a second language.
