Abstract

The new records found in several archive groups allow to retrace the history of the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute of Superior Studies from the creation, immediately after the First World War, to the beginning of the Seventies. The institute was founded to create, promote and sponsor the Catholic University. Studying the history of the Institute leads to the analysis of some fundamental events of the history of the Athenaeum founded by father Agostino Gemelli, «rector for life» of the Catholic University and, at the same time, president of the Toniolo Institute. This contribution underlines the role carried out by the first five presidents of the Institute, from Ernesto Lombardo, appointed at the foundation of the athenaeum, to Carlo Colombo. He was president of the Toniolo during the second half of the Sixties, in a problematic period of transition for the life of the University of the Sacred Heart. During that time the University was involved in the student protests and in a internal and external debate about the catholic status of itself. Through the chairmanships of the Toniolo in the considered period, when it was also committed to Francesco Olgiati, the co-founder of the athenaeum, and Giovanni Battista Montini, Archibishop of Milan, is possible to retrace the evolution both of the Institute and the University, an evolution considered in a long timespan. During that period the Catholic University developed and changed in a continuous comparison with the national history and italian academic system.
