Abstract

The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between philosophy and history of philosophy in the works of Ugo Spirito and Guido Calogero. The paper starts by examining the origins and foundations of philosophical historiography, focusing in particular on its centrality within idealism. If Garin re-sponded to the historiographical framework of Croce and Gentile with a philosophy as historical knowl-edge, the so called «problematicismo» of Spirito and the philosophy of dialogue of Calogero were still linked to standpoint of idealism. The paper then demonstrates their criticism of the thought of Gentile, which is based on the theoretical approach, and it examines their position on the historiographical ques-tion. Thus, this paper offers new insights into the «philological» question as well as an interesting case study to reconsider the relationship between philosophy and history.
