Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] the book analyzes three aspects, corresponding to the three main chapters of the work: i) performance monitoring and their external reporting; ii) control and management of company resources and iii) measurement of investments and related benefits. The three topics, different from each other but united by the need to generate information to improve the management and control of health and safety at company level, make it possible to take a step forward compared to the current state of research on the subject, useful both for the discussion in the area of the scientific community both to business practice. The first chapter investigates the issue of external communication. The survey, carried out by analyzing the external communication documents of companies and in particular the sustainability reports, shows how disclosure is still a niche practice. The study defines and tests a grid of analysis of information regarding health and safety, showing a low attitude on the part of companies to inform stakeholders about the processes implemented and the investments made. Otherwise, the communication of the results obtained appears to be more developed. The second chapter analyzes, through a questionnaire submitted to a sample of companies in the sector, the subject of management control and management of company resources related to health and safety. Three areas are investigated. The focus of the first area is on the relative degree of structuring of the formal and informal elements of management control. The second area of analysis focuses on business skills (strategic, operational and relational) related to health and safety. Finally, the third topic investigated concerns the topic of investments in health and safety and the related results, expressed both in terms of technical performance and in terms of reducing the costs connected to the lack of safety. On the whole it emerges that, while on the one hand the dimensions regarding management control and the development of strategic and operational capacities seem to be more developed (although for a limited group of companies), the same cannot be said in relation to the sphere of external relations of the organization and results related to health and safety management. Finally, the third chapter develops and explores, through a multiple case study with four companies, a model for measuring the value of actual investments in equipment, processes and personnel related to the improvement of health and safety conditions, as well as of the possible economic benefits to these associates. The results reveal a series of technical difficulties and uncertainties related to the quantification of investments, in particular as regards the share of equipment. At the same time they report the potential informative usefulness that a progressive fine-tuning of the analysis method could generate in decision-making and control terms. However, from this point of view, the path to take to equip companies with shared and integrated measurement tools, which go beyond the classic technical indicators of gravity, frequency and incidence, still seems long. Each of the three chapters presents, before going into the merits of the evidences emerged in the research, a specific analysis of the literature that has added to the academic references studies and information emerged from the "gray literature". This collection of information was essential for carrying out the research, and represents an important reference framework for the reader in order to learn more about the subject matter, as well as to have information on the state of the art available on a national and international scale. In each chapter the various phases of the research, the analysis of the data are detailed
