Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Introduction. Being active during adolescence predisposes to an active lifestyle in adulthood. The teaching of Physical Education (EF), helping to bring young people closer to motor activity and the pleasure of practicing it, can be a strategic tool for promoting movement. Often, however, the time and facilities reserved for this discipline are not sufficient, and sometimes the lessons are focused more on the technical gesture than on the benefits of physical exercise. SItI's “Motor Sport for Health” (GSMS) Working Group carried out a multicenter study aimed at evaluating the teaching of EF in the upper secondary school based on the retrospective collection of information among university students. Methods. Students enrolled in the first year of different degree courses in 14 universities were given a questionnaire about experiences and opinions regarding the teaching received in the last two years of high school and the current practice of physical activity (AF). Results. Out of a total of 7,033 respondents (41.3% M, 58.7% F, median age 19), 42.2% consider the EF as a leisure time and 51.7% report only practical lessons. The availability of gyms and equipment is declared by around 90% of the students. 51.6% of the sample reported participation in extracurricular motor activity, which appears to be associated (OR 1.689, IC95% 1.519-1.878) with the current practice of AF, declared by 58.1% of the students. Conclusions. Although facilities and equipment are available in almost the entire territory, some critical issues emerge regarding teaching methods. The provision of AF in out-of-school hours seems a promising strategy to promote the maintenance of an active lifestyle.
