Abstract
This book describes how English has been penetrating linguistic and cultural realities in which communities of speakers in multilinguistic and multicultural environments recognize it as a medium of communication at various levels. Linguistic contact has been influencing the English language itself and its status, also creating hybrid forms, pidgins and creoles. This complex situation is also reflected in teaching practices.
