Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] NTRODUCTION: Telemedicine is the set of medical and computer techniques used to provide remote health services, clinical counseling to professionals and basic information to patients. This appears particularly relevant in the management of chronic diseases, in order to assess and monitor the patient's condition more quickly and easily. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the use of telemedicine and the prevention and reduction of mortality due to long-term complications of diabetes mellitus. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted by consulting the PubMed and ISI Web of Knowledge databases and by examining the bibliography in the most relevant articles. The keywords used were: "telemedicine", "telehealth", "diabetes", "prevention" and "mortality" combined together through the use of the Boolean operators "and" and "or". The research was conducted until February 2011 and limited to articles in English and Italian. The inclusion criteria considered concern the date of publication of the article, the use of telemedicine and the presence of frequency measures to improve the outcome of individuals with diabetes mellitus. RESULTS: The bibliographic search led to the selection of 42 articles of which 10 were included in the review based on the inclusion criteria. 100% of the articles study the association between telemedicine and improvement of the outcome of subjects suffering from diabetes mellitus, highlighting how the use of telemedicine improves the monitoring and management of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. Among the articles included in the study, which assess the association between the use of telemedicine and mortality of subjects suffering from diabetes mellitus, 50% show that resorting to the web in the health sector causes a reduction in the mortality rate of patients suffering from diabetes mellitus . CONCLUSIONS: The association between the use of telemedicine systems and the outcome of patients with diabetes makes it necessary to invest in the quality of information available on the web and stresses the importance of using preventive actions that take into account the new approach to health and the consequent change in the doctor-patient relationship
