Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Background Among the organizational methods used in the assistance given to patients with oncological diseases are the multidisciplinary teams (MDT) in which different specialists (oncologist, surgeon, radiotherapist, histopathologist ...) work together, sharing clinical information of the patients taken in load. This method aims to improve patient outcomes and health performance by reducing variability in clinical practice. The objective of this review is to assess the impact of MDTs on the care process and on the health outcomes of breast cancer patients. Methods The Pubmed and Scopus databases were queried through a search string with keywords such as breast cancer, multidisciplinary team, tumor board, outcome, process, evaluation, efficacy, effectiveness, decision making and impact. Primary studies in English, French, Italian and Spanish were published, published from 1995 onwards. A quality assessment was also carried out with the Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results 8 primary studies published from 2006 to 2018 were selected in Belgium (1), Canada (1), Germany (2), UK (2), USA (2). Preliminary results include: changes in the decision-making process after collegial assessment (4 studies), appropriateness of the provision of chemotherapeutic therapies (1), improvement of patient satisfaction for the treatments received (1), increase in survival (3). Conclusions The multidisciplinary organizational modality has led to a change in the decision-making process, related both to the clinical evaluation of the patient and to the treatment. Furthermore, an improvement in the outcome in terms of health (survival) and patient satisfaction emerges. It would be desirable to further evaluate the impact of the MDTs, in order to guarantee personalized and sustainable performance.
