Abstract

The essay sheds light on the cultural and political debate about the reform of the anticlerical provisions of the Querétaro Constitution (1917) from the Seventies to the 1992 constitutional reform, focusing on key-actors such as Mexican Presidents Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado (1982-1988) and Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988-1994) as well as leading exponents of the Mexican Episcopal Conference.
