Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Governments and diplomacies began to look with interest to the principle of religious freedom as an effective tool in support of their international policy only a few decades ago. This result was the product of a long, and not always linear, process of rethinking the relationship between politics and religion in contemporary societies, which involved both the normative dimension and the more strictly security and diplomatic aspects. Within this process, the central role that the Magisterium of the Catholic Church has played in focusing global attention on this issue will be highlighted.
