Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The expression intellectual disability, the result of a long historical, cultural and social process, promoted by the AAIDD (American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) in line with the theoretical framework underlying the ICF, has replaced, at least in the official classifications and in formal language, the previous one of mental retardation. Although addressing the same population already previously recognized with the term mental retardation, the expression in question highlights a significant evolution on which it is appropriate to focus attention, also for the important repercussions in education and school
