[Autom. eng. transl.] After the historiography of the Italian educational sciences had taken a critical position towards the Habsburg school policy for years, its central role has now been recognized within the history of the school in Italy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its importance is beyond any doubt, not least because of the introduction of a precise training course for prospective teachers. The beginning of the reform process within the teacher training came in the years of Maria Theresa and Joseph II, it received a decisive impulse during the time of Napoleon and was further advanced in March, so that the professionalization of teacher training in the former Habsburg countries in about 80 years ago the unity of Italy (1861), had been completed or made mandatory: the urban teachers had a precise socio-economic status, which was demonstrated on the one hand by having proven theoretical and practical training (of high pedagogical value) and on the other hand by recognizing precise obligations also rights such as seniority and pension conditional. The socio-economic conditions of Lombardy proved - more than the Veneto - to be ready for reform. In about 80 years, the figure of the teacher had changed, particularly in the cities of Lombardy, and anticipated the process of secularization and feminization that affected Italy after unity. The Italian reception of the normal method, the pedagogy and the manual of Austrian origin also created effects of didactic innovation that were also present after the unity of Italy.
