Abstract

The education of the body in Italy was throughout the nineteenth century the preserve of the laity, in particular of liberal ideology, which saw in physical exercise a valid instrument for the formation of character, following an ethic-militaristic conception. Ideological resistance had always alienated a great part of Catholic pedagogy from this world, until it comprised the formative value of physical education and hygiene for the integral growth of the young. In the first years of the twentieth century the magazine of the Milanese oratories applied itself sensitively in favour of education of the body, supporting the introduction and spread of gymnastics in the different oratories, which, thanks to this too, was now well on the way to a complicated process of modernization.
