Abstract
The essay analyzes the strong slowdown in the development of Italy after the great financial crisis of 2008. The main trends that have led to a persistent lack of aggregate demand contrasted by wrong policies are highlighted. The result is the under-utilization of labor and capital and the substantial economic stagnation of the country that is characterized by the two dualisms between North and South and large enterprises vs. smaller companies. In the short term, stimulus policies are needed and, in the long term, the promotion of territories using as a pivot the state-owned companies and the medium-sized enterprises of the fourth capitalism. These can be supported through the diffusion of infrastructures that facilitate the production of high value goods and services and consequently the increase in productivity.
