Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In October 1501, the patrician Leonardo Loredan, former podestà of Padua, was appointed doge of the Serenissima. The election was greeted with enthusiasm by scholars and men of letters, as evidenced by orations or other works written and published for the occasion. The Opuscula by Ravenna-born Lidio Catti (Venice, Giovanni Tacuino, 27 June 1502), the subject of my research project, were born precisely in this context: the poet himself edited his own anthology of Latin and vulgar extravaganzas to dedicate to the new doge. Among the preserved specimens of this edition, the Rovereto, Biblioteca Civica “G. Tartarotti”, r-Ar III 1 25 (1) is interesting not so much for its internal peculiarities, as for its location. The Rovereto Opuscula, in fact, open a miscellany of seven works printed between 1498 and 1502, within which there is a certain affinity of genre (especially neo-Latin poetry) and the majority presence of four editions by Bernardino Vitali. Leafing through this composite volume, the name of Loredan occurs several times in a significant way. In addition to the Opuscula, there are two other works dedicated to the doge, while in the colophon of an edition of Vitali we read a mention of Loredan as «ruler», useful for confirming the more veneto dating (January 1502). Given the theme of the event you organized, I would therefore like to propose an intervention that starts from this miscellany, to analyze the literary, encomiastic and editorial phenomenon linked to the election of Loredan. On the one hand, this study will be necessary to fully understand the genesis and context of the Opuscula, and on the other, it will lead to questioning a witness of the work on both a textual and material level.
