Abstract

The essay traces the events of South Africa from the origins of racial theories on "separate development" to the affirmation of the apartheid regime and the dismantling of the racist system and the transition to democracy. This is an anomalous case in the context of colonial and postcolonial Africa, characterized by the persistence of a "white" regime, which since 1948 legalizes the racial separation underlying the social order, and by its inclusion in the framework of the Cold War . The internal tensions generated by the struggle of the opposition movements and the growing international disapproval weaken the stability of the system, until the new course inaugurated by President De Klerk, with the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, the launch of the new Constitution in the 1993 and the first democratic elections in 1994. The subsequent phase of the "Truth and Reconciliation Commission" allows a national reconciliation free of violence, offering itself as a model for the solution of ongoing conflicts in other areas of the continent.
