Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] Upon returning from any medical check-up, the comment of many seems to be always the same: he did not even let me speak! Comments are wasted on the issue of clinicians' communication skills, both in informative and scientific contexts. Often the questions posed by the clinicians themselves end up in the dock, which do not always seem to be adequately formulated. Faced with an apparent simplicity, the act of application is in reality something complex, which is not always realized through an interrogative sentence and which can have a multiplicity of functions: from the collection of information, to the involvement of someone for the realization purpose, right down to rhetorical questions or what are actually reproaches or expressions of disbelief.
In the book The interrogative structures in interactions in a clinical context Sarah Bigi approaches the issue from a linguistic perspective, investigating the forms and functions of questions in medical interviews, on the basis of a collection of consultations recorded in a diabetes clinic. From the analysis it emerges that the questions are a fundamental tool to allow participants to achieve most of the objectives set by the dialogue in which they are involved.
