Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] How do mafias manage illicit traffics with efficiency and security at the same time? How can the most important mafiosi protect themselves from the risks of such a dangerous activity? What distinguishes mafia bosses in their participation in phone calls and meetings? Why do Mafia leaders necessarily have to attend weddings and funerals? Is it possible to understand if a mafioso has a leading role based on the meetings in which he takes part? Starting from an in-depth study of the importance of social relations in the aetiological theories of crime, the study examines the internal organization and functioning of mafia networks. In particular, it analyzes how mafias balance operational efficiency and security and how the mafia bosses build their position also on the acquisition of a social capital made up of relationships and contacts. In addition to the theoretical reflection and contributions of international applied literature, this volume presents an empirical analysis on various organizations belonging to the 'Ndrangheta. Case studies examine the organizational structure of ndranghetist groups and locals that emerged in some of the most important investigations in recent years, such as the Crime, Infinity, Minotaur and Aemilia operations. This book intends to contribute to the study of the mafias, recognizing the complex, multidimensional and multi-functional nature found in the most recent literature. The analysis of mafia networks can thus usefully integrate other methods to analyze the complexity of criminal organizations.
