Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The Italian banking system has been the subject, since the nineties, of significant changes that have been reflected in the institutional set-ups and in the organizational models adopted by financial intermediaries, with significant effects on company performance and customer relationship c, in more terms general, on the economic development of the country. On a regulatory level, the restructuring process has taken on the consistency of the 1993 Consolidated Law, in which the banks have been freed from the rigidity of the old regulation, being able to adopt any institutional-organizational profile, as long as it is consistent with the respect for sound and prudent management. However, this autonomy has not produced a proliferation of models: the examination of the current morphology of the Italian banking system shows, in fact, the preference for the banking group, which is in any case in continuous evolution due to the variety of configurations assumed. The universal bank model, on the other hand, did not find application, although important theoretical contributions had judged it superior to the banking group. The main organizational solutions chosen by the banks are analyzed in the volume, which examines in particular: • the context factors and the variables that influence organizational decisions, as well as the critical aspects and the potential advantages associated with the models of specialized bank, universal bank and credit group; • the role of legislation in the definition of organizational structures; • the credit systems of Germany, France and Spain and the organizational models operating in them, with particular attention to the German system, for the birth, development and decline of the so-called "Rhine model", emblem of the dichotomy between universal bank and credit group; • the recent restructuring processes of Italian banks, also seen from a European perspective. The volume, in which there is no lack of references and comparisons with some European banking institutions, combines theoretical reflection and empirical tests, carried out through quali-quantitative analyzes based on representative samples of banks and banking groups.
