Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The relevance of rural development programs for the 2014-2020 programming period The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) which supports rural development, or the second pillar of the CAP, was progressively introduced starting from the 1970s and institutionalized with Agenda 2000 in 1997. The Fund contributes to improving: • the competitiveness of the agricultural and forestry sector; • the environment and the landscape; • the quality of life in rural areas and the diversification of the rural economy. The Fund provides complementary assistance to national, regional and local actions that contribute to Community priorities. The Commission and the Member States also monitor the consistency and compatibility of the Fund with other support measures financed by the Community. Together with the EAGGF (European Agricultural Reimbursement and Guarantee Fund), the EAFRD represents one of the two financing instruments of the common agricultural policy (CAP) established by Regulation (EC) n. 1290/2005.
