Abstract

Written French falls within the framework of recommended and actual uses, following the uses illustrated by the various forms of contemporary writing - from personal and institutional texts to digital writing - and the choices made in inclusive writing. The spelling of the French language and its major characteristics are described with the help of numerous examples, from the formation and functioning of the language through its evolution from its origins to the rectifications of 1990. Emphasis is placed on diacritical and auxiliary signs as significant elements of the multi-system of French spelling.
