Abstract

The chapter investigates the role of Company Foundations in a changing Welfare State. Although Company Foundations still represent a modest share within Italian Foundations, they are increasingly showing their potential to boost innovation in social service design and provision. When analysing the initiatives and programs recently introduced by Corporate Foundations, the main features of second welfare are easily identified: modes of intervention inspired by the idea of social innovation; focus on the empowerment of the actions’ beneficiaries; governance models promoting the improvement of local community engagement; involvement of additional resources. The first part of the chapter describes the main characteristics of Corporate Foundations and identifies strengths and weaknesses of their action, taking into consideration the recent trends in CSR and corporate philanthropy. The second part focuses on the current and prospective role of Corporate Foundations as second welfare actors through the analysis of the experiences of some of the most influent Corporate Foundations in Italy.
