Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] In the European cities of Antico Regime, ritual feast and theater were spaces for the construction of social relations and public identities of groups and institutions. The volume analyzes three types of religious feasts and a hagiographic show made in Milan and Lombardy, in the Borromean age: a dramatic procession, a group of solemn translations of relics, a Marian paraliturgy, a Jesuit college show dedicated to the celebration of San Carlo Borromeo. A practice is outlined in which the religious feast could also have political values, in a city where the ecclesiastical hierarchy establishes a dialectical relationship with the civic powers and the Spanish monarchy represented by the governor of the Estado and the power relations are made visible precisely through the festive system.
