Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] Since the "Poetics" of Aristotle the relationship between literature and history represents a decisive problematic node for the development of future Western aesthetics. The essay traces some significant moments of this debate, which involves the concepts of true, verisimilar and wonderful, in an attempt to show the progressive liberation of history from the condition of minority with respect to the poetry to which it was condemned by Aristotelian reflection. Through the pages of Tasso, Castelvetro, Mascardi, Muratori and Manzoni, a path is delineated which leads from the Taxi "Discourses" to the considerations delivered by Manzoni to the pages of the treatise "Del historical novel", in which we note the progress of modern historiography and of the renewed dialogue that is established between creative writing and historical narration.
