[Autom. eng. transl.] As is well known, cities play a fundamental role in maintaining the balance of our planet. Globally, in 2014, the majority of the world population (54%) lived in urban areas, representing - this - a structural change in the distribution of the population. On a European scale, about 70% of the population lives in urban areas today and this percentage is expected to reach 80% by 2020. Cities represent ambivalent realities. On the one hand, in fact, they are the engines of the economy, places of connectivity, creativity, innovation, and service centers for the surrounding areas. On the other hand, however, they concentrate the major socio-economic problems (unemployment, discrimination, poverty, spatial and territorial segregation) and environmental (air pollution, noise, energy consumption, water, etc.). The present paper aims to highlight the role and contribution of cities in promoting environmental and sustainability policies
