Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] What are companies? And why are they important for our lives? They produce wealth (not just for shareholders) and sell the goods we consume. But that's not all. They teach us to work harder than universities do and are the main creators of scientific and technological innovation. In general, they have a great impact on the environment and society. The panorama is assorted. We see companies growing and others imploding. Companies that respect the law and their contractual commitments and others that, once started on the downward slope, drag employees, suppliers and more with them. Sometimes, we are also forced to take into account the damage caused to the environment and society as a whole. For those who own or manage them, and for those who are preparing to do so, all this entails great responsibilities, greater than they may appear at first sight. This book is written above all for these people, but it is also designed for those who are simply looking for help in understanding companies and the role they have in our society. It starts from the fundamental concepts of wealth and the utility of wealth, which define the way we live with risk, the traveling companion in all companies. It addresses the definition of the company's objectives, from which everything else derives. It illustrates the logic with which the company can achieve results superior to those of its competitors, enhancing its activities, made above all by human work. It invites the reader into a long gallery of experiences, from which it tries to distill lessons of general validity. The impact of activities on business results is illustrated through a series of success and failure episodes. The organizational structures are explained starting from company documents extracted from real companies. And so on. Companies explained through companies. Filmed in their natural environment, marked by the struggle for life, natural selection and the evolution of the species, just like the one studied by Darwin.
