Abstract

The article analyses Blumenberg’s considerations concerning the history of metaphysics, in which he in particular focuses on the role of the infinite. The thesis of Blumenberg concerns the birth of modernity, where he emphasizes in the passage from the predication of the infinity from God to the world, the progressive self-assertiveness of the human being. This is the peculiar character of the modern times. The sequence from the medieval finite cosmos to the infinite world establishes an irreversible process in which the human being becomes the protagonist of the history, even if he is not able to control the the epoch-making passage. Between the possibilities of the human being and the epochal changes there is a gap too big, since the epoch is the totality of all the possible interferences between the human actions, that no intention is able to fully understand. The infinite, as that-is-not-infinite, always remains a task that only the historical becoming and the epochal changes can differently and partially cover.
