Abstract

The conquest for autonomy presents itself as an exercise in control over the meaning of one’s existence, a continuous processing of separation and loss. Through autonomy, every child develops his own way of being and of behaving in the world. He affirms his own uniqueness, giving form to his own freedom and experimenting with his growing ability to be self-determined. This contribution considers personalization as the aim of an education in autonomy. Nevertheless, the definition of one’s originality tends not towards a total differentiation and separation from others, and from rules and values. Rather, it aims towards the affirmation of one’s uniqueness as a person who acquaints himself with a world of meanings.
