Abstract
[Autom. eng. transl.] The United States remains the only global superpower in a unipolar international political system. If on the military level the Iraqi campaign has reaffirmed this supremacy, the shadows of an endless post-war period stretch out on the future of that country. On the other side of the Atlantic, Europe, almost twenty years after its political failure in the face of the violent dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, seems determined to take on its international responsibilities, within the framework of an increasingly inevitable alliance with the USA.
