Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The volume collects the results of an interdisciplinary research on the Abbey of S. Maria di Morimondo. Founded in the south-western part of the diocese of Milan in the 1230s, it is the first Lombard Cistercian abbey in chronological order. By virtue of the abundance of historical, artistic and codicological evidence that concerns it, the abbey constitutes a paradigmatic case and an essential training ground for Italian (and not only) monastic historiography. The analysis of hitherto neglected sources and the innovative reading of already known testimonies allow the authors of this volume to retrace a completely original story, starting from the peculiar dynamics of the foundation and institutional development of the abbey, always placed within a broader and more complex ecclesiastical, political, economic and cultural context. The result is an innovative all-round vision, which offers important elements both for Cistercian history as a whole and for its reverberations on the main events of northern Italy in the 12th and 13th centuries.
