Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The extraordinary effectiveness of the voice in expressing its emotions, moods and intentions was known since ancient times, since vocal qualities are an important means to regulate interpersonal relationships, to negotiate conflicts, and to influence thought and conduct of others. Experimental psychology has only recently considered this scientific area in depth. In helping to initiate this field of investigation in Italy, the research presented in this volume examines the distinctive configuration of the paralinguistic aspects in expressing through systematic variations in the modalities of speech (normal, fast and slow, high and low, whispered) different primary emotions (joy, anger, fear, sadness, contempt) and a secondary (tenderness), highlighting the existence of an autonomous paralinguistic code with respect to the linguistic one. The volume also analyzes the processes of decoding these emotions by a sample of "judges" who have made exclusive reference for their recognition to the paralinguistic aspects. The theoretical perspective and the experimental research expressed by the volume can provide useful indications to all those (psychologists, psychotherapists, communication experts, etc.) who are interested in the vocal expression of emotions and human affections.
