Abstract

[Autom. eng. transl.] The reconstruction of the philological history of the life of the humble Servant of God Benedetto Giacobini Proposto di Varallo, and Vicar General of the Valle di Sesia, a Muratorian biography of 1747, is very complex, as evidenced by the latest works updated on the text by Angelo Stoppa ( 1977) and Anna Burlini Calapaj (1994). The manuscripts of different hands and authors and the archival movements are intertwined, contributing, in spite of themselves, to complicate an already intricate story. Despite these difficulties, the census and the philological and linguistic study of this preparatory material, currently in progress, are giving back a very rich framework of ideas for the reflection on the usus scribendi and on Muratori's compositional method, but also on the current language of the time . The loss of data recorded on decayed media, such as microfilms, but also the new archival acquisitions never cataloged and changes in bibliographic records prompted me to research and define an updated list of manuscript documents relating to this work and to propose some initial observations concerning to the contents of some of these, in their relation to the main text. My observations will be divided into two separate articles, as the material is substantial and in progress. In this first intervention I will deal with the documents kept in Modena and Novara, while in the following I will conclude with the observations relating to Borgomanero and the parish archives of Cressa and Varallo.
