Abstract
The collection of 41 devices of the “Accademia degli Intrepidi” of the College of St. Mary of the Angels in Monza is, for the quantity and type of subjects painted, a rare but very significant example of this form of symbolic representation and its permanence in institutes of the Society of Jesus up into the 18th century until the abolition of 1773.
In addition to elements of continuity and discontinuity with the multifaceted and consolidated production of images (hieroglyphics, emblems, affixiones, devices, figured books), these original paintings capture a unique moment of college academies, showing the vitality and versatility of the culture of representation of the Jesuits, including the ability to accommodate, to adapt and shape new tastes and needs in traditional forms.
