Abstract

The site at Palazzo Pignano in the Province of Cremona is known, above all, because of a large villa built in the Late Roman period (4th-5th centuries AD). As earlier studies have shown, the area had already been occupied for several centuries before the buildings of Late Roman period. It continued to be inhabited for a lengthy period afer the villa was abandoned. A document from the year 1000 offers evidence of the presence of a curtem qui dicitur Palatium Apiniani cum plebe. In this study earlier evidence is discussed and enriched thanks to new information obtained during regular periods of excavation undertaken during the years 2016-2018.
